Welcome to an immersive experience of early 1980s home computing.

This application is dedicated to the Sinclair ZX81, offering a comprehensive collection of example software. It's important to note that the system is self-contained, meaning that additional code or games cannot be added remotely.

Background

In 1980, Science of Cambridge (later renamed Sinclair Research), a British company, introduced the Sinclair ZX80 home computer. Developed in collaboration with technology company Nine Tiles and manufactured in a Timex Corporation factory in Dundee, Scotland, the ZX80 made a significant impact on home and hobbyist computing not only in the UK but also in various other countries.

The popularity of the ZX80 paved the way for its successor, the Sinclair ZX81, which was released in March 1981. The ZX81 further solidified the influence of home computing and captured the imaginations of enthusiasts worldwide. In July 1982 and July 1983, Timex Corporation and Sinclair Research collaborated again to bring the Timex Sinclair 1000 (TS1000) and 1500 (TS1500) ZX81 models to the US market.

Meanwhile, another iconic British home computer—the Sinclair ZX Spectrum—was in development and eventually made its debut in April 1982. But let's save that story for another time.

We would like to extend special thanks to Nine Tiles for granting permission to include their ROM code, to which they still hold the intellectual property rights after all these years.

Furthermore, countless appreciation goes to all the developers of the loaded ZX81 software who have generously authorized including their titles in this application. We hope this list of software will continue to expand with future updates.
